BMW M Boss Roos: 'M3 Touring Car A One-Off Event' For N24

The 2026
Nürburgring 24 was one of the better races in recent memory, not just for the N24 itself but one of the best races in any motorsport series on the planet.

Through all of the headlines, the drama within cars competing and the unusual participants such as the Dacia Logan and a trio of Mercedes-Benz 190E-inspiried entries by HWA Racelab, one of the other amazing stories going into and coming out of the race weekend was the BMW M3 Touring 24H.

Originally designed as an April Fool's joke by BMW M in 2025, the brand actually took the developmental steps to build the car in reaillty with the goal of racing it at the N24 in the specialized SP-X class, the same class as those three HWA EVO.R's.

The car was an absolute smashing success, fighting inside both the top 10 and top 5 running order for much of the 24 hours of action, with it even riding at the front of the entire field in P1 for a time. As fans dreamed of where else the car could travel and race in the future, a bucket of cold water was dumped on the idea relatively early on in the race.

Head of motorsport for BMW Andreas Roos jumped on the broadcast to explain the background, development process and (still at that time) hopeful race performance of the car with the announcer crew, and during that brief chat he explained how the future of the car is for all intents and purpose resigned to a retired showpiece available for display purposes only, as no more competitive stints on track are currently planned - because it's not BMW's decision to make.

Roos explained that through the build-up to the project, a private investor had contributed a huge, unspecified amount of cash to support the cause, and that the end-game condition of he/she/they doing so was that they are to receive ownership of the M3 Touring 24H after the conclusion of the N24.

Now, there's some semantics of wordplay going around after the fact as BMW said that "the car will appear at selected events in the future." Now, what does that mean exactly? Racing events? Or motorsport-appreciation events events like Goodwood? Or something similar to how Chevy had the 2023 LMGT3 AM-winning Corvette C8.R on display at this year's Rolex 24 at Daytona? Or, for some fans still holding out hope, as a Garage 56 entry to Le Mans next season?

If we're going off what Roos said on the broadcast, it's pretty cut-and-dry that the M3 Touring 24H was a one-off, special-for-the-2026-N24-only entry that capitalized on it's opportunity to make itself a racing legend in very short order. BMW themselves are not looking to replicate in the future, either, with Roos also ruling out any similar wagon/Touring-mod efforts from M Motorsport.

If we're taking everything at face value, it's now up to the private investor/investors that own the car to do what they please with it. An Instagram post from Thursday showed the car back at BMWs headquarters in Munich for a photoshoot highlighting the battle scars earned from the N24.

In a perfect world, we'll continue to see this beautiful machine for years to come.
