Breaking: Lamborghini To Exit WEC, Expanded IMSA Program Likely
The news we were all eagerly anticipating is seemingly confirmed.
According to dailysportscar.com, Lamborghini will be leaving the World Endurance Championship effective immediately, which will see both the SC63 LMDh Hypercar as well as the Huracan LMGT3 machine exit the grid.
The one bit of good news out of this new report is that the SC63 will likely continue to run in IMSA, either via a full-season single car effort, or an expanded two-car operation.
Rumors have persisted for months regarding the future of the Iron Lynx/Squadra Corsa programs heading into 2025. The results haven't been there on the track for the LMDh machine nor for the Iron Lynx and Iron Dames in their GT3 cars. Between budget restrictions, a lack of preparation and development for the SC63 and unreliability with the Huracan, the Italian outfit faced multiple hardships in fighting to be competitive for the 2024 season.
Couple that with the fact that 2025 will be the last season for the Huracan, and it seems that everyone is jumping ship for a better opportunity, including the Dames.
The writing was on the wall as far back as the summer when the WEC announced their new two-car Hypercar mandate, which will require all manufacturers to field at least two cars on the grid starting in 2025. Lamborghini were faced with the reality of needing to deploy a second car to the track even when they were lacking the development and progress with their original entry.
This also now opens the door for another manufacturer to take the place of the departing Huracan in the LMGT3 ranks, and the speculation continues to direct back at Mercedes-AMG and the possibility that we'll see the AMG GT3 quickly homologated and entered into the WEC for 2025, which would be another step towards Mercedes securing their own spot on the Hypercar grid.
More to come...
